Red Hen Reads: My Top Reasons Why I Read Craft Books

Why Purchase A Craft Book?

April 2024

I don’t really have a problem with this question:) I have been collecting craft books for over 30 years. But maybe others wonder, why spend money on a craft book especially since many of them are edging up there in price?

Can’t you just go on YouTube or Instagram and find a free tutorial on the new hand craft you want to learn? Yes! You can watch someone demonstrate a technique and you might even be able to replicate what someone is teaching you from those resources. I have done this too. But I will note that mostly I want to see how difficult this new craft would be or to help me through a tricky spot that I don’t understand. I often have a book or pattern in hand.

Lately, weaving has caught my eye, all types. I know I don’t have the space or time for floor loom weaving but I’ve heard about Inkle Loom Weaving. An Inkle Loom is a smaller table top loom meant for weaving narrow patterned bands for trim, straps, belts, etc. I’ve watched YouTube videos and was all set to buy one. I flipped through some of the weaving books in the shop especially Weaving Patterned Bands and Handwoven Tape and learned that there are other ways to weave colorful bands besides with a specialty loom. I’m still thinking about it….

Most Craft Book authors are experts in their chosen craft. They have a following and they have demonstrated mastery of their craft so that others would want to read about and follow their advice. Anyone can post a video on Youtube or Instagram but that doesn’t mean the information is accurate. Don’t get me wrong, these platforms are great for helping people get their name and their work out there in a way that is accessible to lots of people. And popular YouTubers have gone on to write books!

By far, my biggest reason for collecting craft books over the years is the inspiration provided by the photos and content. Most other genres of books I read once and then they collect dust on a bookshelf until I pass them along. Not so with craft books. I will often flip through them and be inspired by something- a color palette, a design idea, a project for another project idea. And well, I just love looking through them over and over. Can’t say that I have rewatched a video tutorial over and over for inspiration like flipping through some of my favorite craft books.
